Role Description

The Cell Engineering team within the Technology group at Form is multidisciplinary and focused on delivering qualified battery cell designs that meet operational performance targets, at cost and with high reliability, from controlled processes on high-volume manufacturing lines for Form Energy's utility-scale multi-day energy storage system.

We're hiring an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our Cell Engineering Design team in Berkeley, CA. In this role, you will execute combustion, thermal, and fluids analysis to define critical design requirements for our iron-air battery cell and system. Additionally, you will design mechanical components for thermal and fluid transfer, including verification testing of those components. This role will work closely with our systems engineering team to ensure that cells meet overarching product requirements. You will bring expertise in design and analysis of pressure relief features in metal and/or plastic materials, fabricated with stamping, molding, or related processes. Experience in rigorous testing of these mechanical engineering physics is also required. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of scaling our multi-day energy storage system at Form and contributing to a sustainable future!

What you'll do:

  • Design sheet metal and plastic components and specify critical interfaces for implementation in Form Energy's iron-air battery cells

  • Own analysis and prototyping efforts for sheet metal and plastic components; familiar with quick-turn fabrication methods to prove out design concepts

  • Develop and execute verification, validation, and reliability test plans to demonstrate sheet metal and plastic components meet functional and lifetime requirements

  • Engage with external sheet metal, stamping, molding, and other vendors to incorporate design-for-manufacturing feedback into your designs

  • Produce and release detailed 3D CAD models, 2D part and assembly drawings; define technical specifications (dimensional, functional, performance, manufacturing)

  • Perform tolerance analysis

What you'll bring:

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field; Bachelor's with 5+ years, or Master's with 3+ years with industry experience

  • Expert in designing sheet metal and/or plastic components; familiar with fabrication processes

  • Experience supporting manufacturing ramp of sheet metal and plastic components and assemblies

  • Excellent communicator across a range of engineering and business functions

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced startup environment
